Batteries

In days gone by, your battery was primarily used for starting the car. In today’s high-tech machines, however, your battery is responsible for powering a whole host of extra gizmos, from electric windows to your iPod.

Modern batteries are sealed units, so there should be no need to top them up. However, an occasional bit of preventative maintenance is required. If the battery terminals become corroded, you’ll get a poor quality electrical contact, rendering your battery only partially effective. To prevent this, simply smear a light coating of petroleum jelly or grease on the terminals.

It’s particularly important to keep your battery maintained in winter, when it’s got to work that much harder with heaters, lights etc. all going at full steam.

How you know it’s time to have your battery replaced

• If it fails to start the car on more than one occasion.
• If the dashboard lights are dull when you switch on the ignition.
• If your battery warning light comes on.
