The exhaust system on your car is designed to carry the burned fumes from your engine to the rear of your car via the silencers and catalytic converter. It comes in for an astonishing amount of punishment. First of all, it has to contend with intense heat, day after day, mile after mile.
Then there’s the fact that the fuel waste burned off within the system will eventually cause rust and corrosion, leading to that dreaded ‘throaty’ sound that tells you it’s time for a change.
Apart from the fact that the noise from a faulty exhaust will eventually drive you half mad, you will also spend more money on fuel if your exhaust is faulty, along with allowing toxic gases to escape. This could be very serious if they make their way into the passenger section of your vehicle, causing nausea and drowsiness.
How you know it’s time for a new exhaust?
• When the sound from your exhaust system becomes very loud and ‘throaty’.
• When you see any signs of rust or, indeed, a hole in any part of your exhaust system.
• When your car splutters when taking off and a petrol smell is noticeable within your car.
