Oil is the great day-to-day protector of your engine, reducing friction between the moving parts, preventing over-heating and maintaining optimum compression.

One of the cheapest but most beneficial ‘treats’ you can give your car is to change the oil at regular intervals – certainly no less frequently than your car’s handbook recommends.

Apart from the oil itself, you also need to ensure that the oil filter is replaced regularly. Its job is to eliminate any particles or impurities in the oil, thus reducing engine wear.

How you know it’s time for an oil change

• If it’s past the oil change interval as specified in your car’s handbook.
• If you see black, cloudy emissions from your exhaust pipe.
