Shock Absorbers

There can often be a level of misunderstanding about the function of your shock absorbers. Quite simply, their role is to keep all four tyres in contact with the ground, giving you maximum grip for braking and maximum traction for accelerating and cornering.

When you drive over a pothole or a major bump, the springs on your car are compressed to adjust to the height of the surface you’re driving over. But when you’ve passed the hazard, you don’t want your car to automatically spring back to their original position, as this would make for very uncomfortable driving.
Therefore, a shock absorber is fitted to each of the four corners of your car to prevent this bouncing movement.

How you know it’s time to have your shock absorbers replaced?

  • If the car feels particularly bumpy when driven over rough surfaces.
  • Sit on any of the four corners of your car and check if the car resumes its original position quickly and smoothly when you dismount. If not, it’s a sure sign of advanced wear.
  • If you notice oil leaking on the body of the shock absorber.
